The major planting session of the year has been completed over this weekend (two evening sessions to avoid the worst of the heat). I now have in 8 buckets of salad potatoes, 6 tomato plants, beans, , mange tout peas, cabbage, spinach, garlic, 3 courgettes (may regret that!), strawberries, salad leaves, 2 chilli peppers, and aubergine and sweet pepper (just one of each as a last ditch effort at outdoor growing). I have a cucumber to plant out in a week or two as well, and more spinach ad salad leaves, and possibly some kale (they’re looking a bit unhealthy at the moment). All this goes in my two small beds and pots on the patio. Photos to follow!

Happy Birthday… to me!

Just a text post today – I have some pictures to post from our walk round Normanby Hall park last week, but a nice hot bubble bath is calling my name so it’ll have to wait.

I turned 26 today and have been spoilt rotten… especially by Chris, who got me a bike! So I have no excuse now not to learn. I forsee lots of bruising! We plan on driving out somewhere fairly secluded with some smooth grass and a slight slope to start learning on… just have to find that suitable place!

I also got a £20 Amazon voucher (yay, books!!) and a £20 Stephen Smith’s voucher (big garden centre/home places near here). … what would you buy? I’m torn between garden stuff and craft stuff!

I should be in bed by now, but instead I’ve been writing HTML. As you do.

*Now* I’m going to bed!

Everybody needs some ‘aww’ in their lives…

Monday, May 26, 2008

Well, we had a lovely weekend down in Sussex – mostly touring around some nice little towns like sussex, a couple of meals out, seeing friends, and spending time with my sister and nephew Charlie.

Charlie is now a very boisterous two year old, but he’s also now communicating properly which makes him fun to be with. Although he does have a worrying addiction to Mario Kart on the Nintendo Wii. Usually my sister isn’t the type to dump him in front of the tv, but with Billy in hospital he’s kind of suffering from being carted around from relative to friend to relative, and he’s not the happiest of kids at the moment. I can understand that constantly arguing with him and telling him off because he’s acting up will probably make things worse in the long run, so better to give him some leeway. Anyway… horrendous poopy nappy excluded… I had a really good afternoon with him :) Unfortuatly I didn’t get to see Billy as he’s still in hospital, but he’s going home tomorrow, which is great news :)

Unfortunatly, there’s some bad news… after a 5 1/2 hr drive home today, we got back to discover my greenhouse had completely collapses. Death toll is unknown as yet but I think I’ve lost a fair few plants… and the greenhouse is wrecked. The cover and poles are okay, but many of the joint pieces have snapped, and I don’t know if they can be replaced. Probably not :(

Plant Progress – Herbs

I seem to have confused a couple of labels when I was planting herbs – I noticed today that my ‘opal basil’ was in fact green. And smells of licorice/aniseed. Which makes it thai basil.

So the question is, what the hell is the one next to it, which I labelled as thai basil? I’ve tried sniffing it, and I really can’t figure out if I’m smelling slight lemon or slight mint or just general herby-ness. From what I can remember planting I’m *sure* it must be a type of mint or basil, but I planted several basils (lemon/lime, thai etc). Anybody got any idea?

I’ve just realised something. For the past several months, I’ve been travelling to work in the dark. I sit behind the counter all day – which is way at the back of the building and thus receives almost zero natural light. Then I leave work and travel home – in the dark. Meaning, 5 days a week, I get very very little natural daylight, maybe 10 mins worth when I pop out to get a drink, drop a book at the library, or nip to the post office.

That can’t be good for my mood or energy levels, right? I’ve never been a morning person so it’s difficult to tell if my sluggishness at getting up is related to it. I can’t help but think it is, though…

My Kitchen

Our old fridgefreezer was in front of an old pantry, which houses the gas meter. As we’re on a prepayment system it meant moving the fridge on a regular basis – which we think contributed to it’s death. So the new one has been put in the only other space – in front of the back door. We do have ‘patio’ style doors in the living room, so this isn’t too much of a hardship. The one benefit is that I now have lots of extra storage space :)

dscf0191.jpgHere’s our kitchen. Nothing fancy, being a rented house – but luckily it has a decent amount of counter top and cupboard space. Please excuse the overflowing recycling boxes under the counter – we keep forgetting to put them out for collection! Out of sight on the left is the sink and a large window – but the window at the end gets more sun, and so houses a few plants (at the moment a small palm, some baby aloes, and some coriander). The cooker is on the right, with a couple of small shelves which hold my herbs and spices. The new fridgefreezer is on the left, and under the counter is an old fridge which doesn’t get all that cold – so it houses drinks and things like pickles and jam which benefit from refridgeration but won’t go off if it’s not really cold. There’s also a radiator under the counter, so I’m thinking that would be a nice warm space to bring on seedlings. Until yesterday there was some carpet ‘rug’ on the floor, for comfort’s sake (tiled floors are coooold!), but I’ve got sick of it’s trapping dirt properties so I’m having a trial run without it

dscf0192.jpg My new pantry :) I spent a couple hours cleaning it out the other day (10 years of non-use means a lot of dust, grime and spiders!). It could definitely do with some new plastic covering for the shelves, but it serves its purpose. We’ve put all the canned goods in there, to try and clear some cupboard space in the kitchen. I need to have a think about the best way to utilise the space.

Quick update – I’ve redone the ‘Garden Pictures and Plans’ page, collating all the ‘best’ photos from my garden last year. Hopefully the same will happen this year!
